가격이라고 쓰이는 단어는 굉장히 많다. 하지만 그 단어들의 의미를 정확히 이해하고 쓴다면 가장 기본적인 회화에서 좀 더 자신 있게 활용 할 수 있을 것이다.
“가격 / 값” 이라고 쓰이는 단어들을 보면 :
price, cost, charge, fee, rate, fare... 등등이 있다...
PRICE
~ price of something. 이라 함은 가장 흔히 물건의 값을 말할 수 있겠다.
ex) I'm all into this car, but the price is too high.
※ 여기서 만약 price 대신 cost를 쓰게 되면 그 뜻은 전달이 될 수도 있겠지만 정확한 표현은 아니다.
COST
~ cost of something. 이라 함은 물건을 살 때 혹은 무언가를 할 때나 어떤 물건을 사용해야 할 때 꼭 지불해야하는 값을 말한다.
ex) The cost of having this car repaired was $250.
ex) To use that vacuum cleaner costs 50cents per 30minutes.
CHARGE
~ charge라는 단어도 정말 많이 쓰이는 말 중 하나이다. 여기서는 일단 지불에 관한 이야기를 해보도록 하자. 여기서 charge는 어느 업체에 의뢰해서 서비스를 받을 때 지불해야하는, 혹은 서비스이용료(service charge)로 쓰인다.
ex) The company has offered to install the software free of charge.
ex) The waiter explained that the bill includes a 15% service charge. (식당에서)
※ Charge와 자주 어울릴 수 있는 단어로는 : connection, service, rent, interest.....
FEE
~ 어떻게 보면 Charge와 똑같이 쓰인다고 생각을 할 수 있을 만큼 비슷한 뜻이지만 미세한 차이점이 있다. Fee는 일반적으로 어느 기관에 입장을 할 때 지불해야하는 입장료로 이해하면 편안하고 정확한 표현이 될 것이다.
ex) Most art galleries charge an entrance fee.
※ 또한 변호사나 병원과 같은 전문적인 기관을 사용 할 때도 Fee를 쓴다.
ex) How much did they charge for the operation fee?
FARE
~ 주로 교통수단을 이용하는 가격을 말한다.
ex) How much is the train fare from Toronto to Montreal?
ex) She spends $20 every week on bus fares.
RATE
~ 주로 수당 - 흔히들 말해 시간당 얼마, 일당 얼마, 주당 얼마... 이런 식으로 따져지는 서비스에 따른 지급해야하는 또는 지급받아야 되는 값을 말한다.
ex) Our shop assistants are paid an hourly rate of $7.50.
[받는 돈]
pay 일해서 번(받을) 돈 / 보수 / 급료 ( = the money that you earn by working)
예] a minimum rate of pay, sick pay
income (정기적인) 수입 ( = all the money that you receive regularly, for work or for any other reason)
예] be on a low income
wages (공장이나 가게에서 고용주에 의해) 매주 지불되는 돈 / 주급 / 임금 ( = the money that someone is paid every week by their employer, especially someone who works in a factory, shop etc)
예] minimum wage 최저임금 (=the lowest amount of money that can legally be paid per hour to a worker)
salary 월급 ( = the money that someone is paid every month by their employer, especially someone who is in a profession, such as a teacher or a manager)
예] a salary of £100,000/$10,000 etc / a good (high) salary / be on a salary (=be earning a salary)
overtime 초과근무 수당 ( = money that is paid to someone for additional hours that they have worked)
bonus 상여금 / 특별수당 ( = money added to someone's pay, especially as a reward for good work)
예] Liz earned a £1000 bonus for being the best salesperson of the year.
fringe benefits 복리후생 ( = the additional things such as holiday pay, free food, or free health insurance, which a worker receives in addition to their pay)
perk 급여 이외의 편익/특전 ( = something valuable or enjoyable that you get from your work apart from pay, especially something you get unofficially)
예] I only eat here because it's free - one of the perks of the job.
tip ( = a small amount of money in addition to the ordinary payment, which you give to someone such as a waiter or taxi-driver)
commission 수수료 ( = money earned by someone whose job is to sell things, based on the value of what they sell)
예] His basic salary is low, but he gets 20% commission on everything he sells
